In 2014, the provincial Senior Friends Advisory Council discussed ways to reach out to more Moravian older adults. As congregations continue to age (28% of Moravians in the Southern Province are over 65 years of age), effective older adult ministry becomes even more critical. The Aging Well Team was born out of this conversation. Several members of the Senior Friends group volunteered to be on this task force. It includes 2 retired geriatric nurses as well as several other members who have an interest in this area of ministry.
The Aging Well Team helps congregations recognize the need for and then find meaningful ways of providing programming and resources for their members who are older adults, as they age and deal with a variety of challenges. The team focuses their time and energy in the following areas:
- The Aging Well Conference: Attendees will be able to choose from a series of workshops designed to help older adults navigate today’s changing world. The 2018 Aging Well Conference is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 at Clemmons Moravian Church. 80 participants from 23 churches attended the 2017 Aging Well Conference at Friedberg Moravian Church. - Older Adult Fall Rally: Moravians from across the province enjoy a fellowship meal, entertainment, and hear updates on various provincial outreach efforts. The 2017 Fall Rally was held on October 10 at Hopewell Moravian Church.
- Older Adult Liaisons: The team asked congregations to designate a liaison who both receives and shares information about various opportunities in the community, such as health screenings, Tai Chi schedules, Provincial events, etc. If your congregation would like to add a liaison to our distribution list, please contact Heather Stevenson at (336) 722-8126.
