Spiritual Growth

fotolia spiritual growth intro“We realize that our Christian faith must continually be nourished if it is to remain living and vital. Therefore, we desire to grow in our Christian lives through family devotions, personal prayer and study, and the opportunities for spiritual development offered by the church.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gemeinschaft?
It is a spiritual formation program of the Moravian Church, Southern Province, designed to nurture and challenge the interior and exterior Christian journey of Moravians as individuals and in a small group context. Gemeinschaft offers the opportunity to focus awareness on God’s saving grace and power in our lives in a deliberate, intentional, and committed manner in a community of believers. The program provides a structure that encourages accountability, daily disciplines, community, new habits, commitment and confidentiality.

How did Gemeinschaft get started?
The Spiritual Growth Commission of what is now the Board of Cooperative Ministries developed the Gemeinschaft program in 1988, in response to a provincial visioning survey. They’d been asked to explore ways the church could foster “spiritual renewal,” in hopes that such programming would develop both the inward and outward life of faith with an understanding of our relationship with God, ourselves, and others.

I’m interested in Gemeinschaft. How does the program work?
The Gemeinschaft program begins on August 13th Sunday with a commissioning of group members during worship. Soon after, small groups begin meeting weekly for the next forty weeks. The program ends in spring with a re-commissioning liturgy on Trinity Sunday (first Sunday in June).

I’ve already done Gemeinschaft. Is there more?
Yes, Gemeinschaft is actually a three-year program:

  • Year 1 (GI): explores the inner faith of the heart and the mind through the practice of spiritual disciplines.
  • Year 2 (GII): applies this inner faith to the world around us and challenges us to serve for the sake of others.
  • Year 3 (GIII): synthesizes GI and GII as it reflects on the history and doctrines of the Moravian Church and offers examples of Christian prayers, creeds and catechisms from various periods.

This sounds great, but I can’t commit to forty weeks right now. What other options are there?
The Spiritual Growth Commission continues to work on programming options that provide ways for busy Moravians to nurture their faith. We’ll let you know when we have some additional options for you! There is a small booklet called Still Waters, that offers a 6-week study for small groups on exploring and writing a spiritual autobiography.

How do I sign up?
