WD: A good time to look up

122013lookupintroWhen I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Psalm 8:3-4

It was the first Sunday in Advent, the beginning of the church year, and the preacher had begun the familiar preparation sermon. “Prepare the way of the Lord,” the preacher toned from the high pulpit. “All who have ears let them hear.” Directly over the preacher’s head was a traditional Moravian star, nearly six feet across, lit for the first time just minutes before.

WD: Daggett Moravian “saddles up” for Cowboy Church celebration

112013CowboyChurchIntro“Get along little doggie” isn’t something you hear very often in church. But when the Daggett Moravian Congregation gathered on September 8 for their third annual “Cowboy Church” observance, it’s certain that visions of the Way Out West were on member’s minds.

WD: Filling in the GAPS

092013gapsintroEvery Monday night we here at the GAPS Community at Downey Moravian Church sit down together to share a meal. As you might imagine, most aspects of our life together in intentional community involve some level of intentionality and purpose. But the lens that provides us with much of our focus and direction is this weekly house meal when we gather to reflect on where we have been, to plot and plan for where we are going, and to freely imagine the new paths that we might forge together.

Thursday, April 27 — Psalm 55:9–15

Job 32,33; 1 Corinthians 7:17–24

Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:18–19

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree.” Luke 13:19

Through the gift of the amazing variety of seeds on earth, you feed our hunger, give us shelter and clothing, help us to wisely use our soil and give us beauty and pleasure. Through these gifts, you give us the ability to live, to grow, and to serve and be served by others. Give all people in this world, we pray, the seeds of hope and nourishment, and help us to do our part in serving others. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
