Legislation Passed By Our Canadian District Synod of 2004
A Brief Overview of Resolutions and Reports

Church in a Changing World
(1) That the 2004 Canadian District Synod accept the written report as submitted by the Church in a Changing World Committee.
(2) Each church be encouraged to develop intentional caring strategies that nurture empathy and trusting relationships within their congregation.
(3) The 2004 Canadian District Synod encourage and affirm the work of congregations seeking to be involved in issues of social justice; and be it further
(4) The 2004 Canadian District Synod support the work of congregations by designating program funds for social concerns for this intersynodal period; and be it further
(5) The 2004 Canadian District Synod encourages congregations to make application to the Board of Elders of the Canadian District for the use of these funds. The BECD will distribute the funds in a manner consistent with the stewardship of the church and the steadfastness to the call of Jesus Christ for peace and justice.
(6) that this 2004 Synod direct that the Board of Elders of the Canadian District (BECD) establish a Task Force to assess the need for Seniors’ Housing for Moravians in Alberta, to determine a feasible location and alternative, to research funding and present a report to BECD by the Spring of 2005; and be it further
(7) that if the Task Force determines a Moravian need, feasible location and funding plan for Seniors’ Housing the Task Force be empowered by BECD to move forward in the process of establishing a not-for-profit Seniors’ Housing organization; and be it further
(8) that upon a successful establishment of a not-for-profit Seniors’ Housing organization in consultation with BECD, further action be taken to begin the development of a Seniors’ Housing Complex during the next intersynodal period.
(9) that the 2004 Canadian District Synod directs the Church in a Changing World Committee under the direction of the Board of Elders of the Canadian District to create opportunities to increase knowledge and to encourage tolerance and respect of other religions by creating opportunities to increase knowledge and understanding of each other’s faith and cultural backgrounds.

Church Government and Administration
(1) the District President’s Report, The Canadian Moravian Historical Society Report and the reports from each of the eight Canadian District Churches be accepted by the Canadian District Synod of (2004)
(2) The Moravian Church in Canada continue its support of the District website; and be it further
(3) The Board of Elders of the Canadian District (BECD) recruit a committee to evaluate the purpose of design of the web site; and be it further
(4) The Canadian District Website be redesigned according to the findings of the evaluation committee appointed by the BECD; and be it further
(5) The Canadian District Website be updated on a regular basis; and be it further
(6) The BECD appoint one of their members to be responsible for regular communication with the site developer/maintainer to initiate updates and provide update information; and be it further
(7) The 2004 Canadian District Synod allocate a one-time amount of up to $2,500 for the redevelopment of the district website; and be it further
(8) any additional funding for ongoing maintenance of the District website be requested directly from the BECD.
(9) the Moravian Church in Canada express it’s appreciation to Kastle Consulting for it’s generous donation of domain hosting and maintenance.

New Church Strategies – Evangelism and New Church Development
(1) The Canadian District Synod of the Moravian Church Northern Province 2004 accepts the written reports as submitted by The Canadian District Committee of Church Growth and Evangelism and The New Church Strategy Committee.
(2) The New Church Strategies & Evangelism Committee offers the following programs and ideas as a resource list for evangelism and outreach:

Stewardship and Finance Committee
(1) the report (The Board of Elders of the Canadian District (BECD) of the Moravian Church in America financial reports dated December 31, 2003) be accepted as presented and be it further
(2) that a vote of thanks be given to June Ericson, District Treasurer, and to the BECD.
(3) that a one time grant, (to a maximum of $15,000) be disbursed from the Restricted Mineral Rights Royalty Fund by the Board of Elders of the Canadian District, at their discretion, for the operation of a Moravian Museum in the old Bruderheim Church
(4) the report (The Canadian Moravian Foundation Report to Synod) be accepted as presented.
(5) the Canadian District Synod of 2004 ratify the Investment Policy Statement that will give investment guidance to the Canadian Moravian Foundation.
(6) the Canadian District Synod of 2004 accept the Investment Policy Statement as put forward by Solid Financial Options.
(7) That the Budget (2004 Budget of the Canadian District of the Moravian Church in North America) be accepted as presented.
(8) that the 2004 Synod of the Canadian District endorse the Terms of Reference of the District Stewardship Committee.

World Mission Committee
(1) That the 2004 Canadian District Synod recognize and thank the Mission Council for the good work it has accomplished; and be it further
(2) That the 2004 Canadian District Synod officially recognize that the Canadian Mission Council shall now be known as the Canadian Moravian Mission Society; and be it further
(3) That the 2004 Canadian District Synod accept the written report as submitted by the Canadian Mission Council.
(4) The 2004 District Synod accepts the written report as submitted by the coordinator of the Rajpur Foster Children Project.

VanEs Camp and Conference Centre Committee (VECCC)
(1) The three reports of the VECCC (VECCC Financial Statements for the Year Ended December 31, 2003, VECCC Report to Synod for the Years 2000 – 2003 and VECCC Long Range Plan Update) be accepted as received; and be it further
(2) The VECCC Board and the many volunteers who have assisted the Board be commended for their work and for their contribution to the life of the Canadian District.
(3) The Canadian District Synod 2004 approve the request of the VECCCB to sell the (16) 9 acres of land which is situated south of Highway 14 and use the revenues so derived for a capital development project which furthers the Long Range Plan of VECCC
(4) The quota allotment for Summer Camping be increased to $10 per communicant member; and be it further
(5) The quota amount be reviewed on an annual basis jointly by BECD and the Van Es CCC Board.

Youth, Christian Education and Programming
(1) The report of the District Youth and Programming Committee (2000-2003) be accepted as presented; and be it further
(2) The 2004 Canadian District Synod extends its thanks to the District Youth and Programming Committee for its work.
(3) The Canadian District Synod 2004 strongly encourages all district churches to incorporate the recommendations of the Eighth Partial Report of the Youth Ministries Committee from the 2002 Synod of the Moravian Church, Northern Province into their youth ministries; and be it further
(4) The District Youth Committee ensure that all district youth leaders receive the Eighth Partial Report of the Youth Ministries Committee from the 2002 Synod of the Moravian Church, Northern Province.
(5) the Canadian District Synod of 2004 shall affirm with gratitude the contributions made by the youth delegates, Shannon Todd, Chris Finley, Rob Britton, Kyle Trevor, Andrew Kerslake, Brandon Salyzyn, and be it further
(6) the Board of Elders of the Canadian District facilitate the inclusion and voting rights of the youth delegates in perpetuity except in the case of youth under 18 years of age with regards to financial matters.
