An Invitation to Spiritual Enrichment

Roma Combs
The Moravian - September 2003

If you live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, or plan to come for a visit, please accept this personal invitation to experience what some day soon will be the most beautiful place you will ever encounter. Visit and walk the Sunnyside Flower Labyrinth located at the corner of Haled and Lomond Streets, just three minutes south of Old Salem. Call us for directions at 336.724.7558.

A walk through a labyrinth is a meditative experience designed to lead to a spiritual event similar to a religious pilgrimage. Here is the reason you must accept this invitation soon.

Sunnyside Ministry, an emergency assistance agency of the Board of Evangelism and Home Missions of the Moravian Church in North America, Southern Province, is charged with doing what it can to assist all the residents of its service area with their physical and spiritual well being. Over the years Sunnyside has done an outstanding job with the physical portion of that charge through various emergency assistance programs. Sunnyside has added a spiritual garden program to its neighborhood ministry in an attempt to better meet the spiritual aspect of this charge. The Sunnyside Labyrinth Garden, a place of beauty and peace, is intended to focus the community’s attention on building a robust future based on the strength of its diversity through spiritual enrichment. The garden is the focal point of that outreach and will be of great benefit to the whole community for years to come.

This formal garden contains a seven-circuit flower labyrinth as its centerpiece. The labyrinth is an archetype of unity and spiritual wholeness, a divine imprint found in almost all religious traditions in various forms around the world. By walking a labyrinth, you can rediscover a long-forgotten tradition of worship designed for spiritual enrichment. As you follow the curving path, the journey to the center is a time of releasing, letting go of the details of life to quiet the mind, balance the body, and calm the soul. During this time you should make an intentional effort to expect an answer to the prayerful concerns you bring with you. Resting in the center is a time for spiritual enrichment. Here you will receive energy, insight, and serenity through quiet prayer, reflection, or meditation. The walk out is a time for unifying the body, mind, and soul to energize the spirit in preparation for the challenges of life. You will leave the path with a new vision, purpose, and understanding for your relationships with all of God’s great creation.
