The Blessings of a Parking Lot

basketball1For the past three years the Freedom Moravian Church has raised funds for several different ministries by simply using the church parking lot. What do they do? The church holds their annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament which has been bringing in quite the crowd. This fundraiser filled with family fun basketball, food, carnival games, 50/50 free throw contest and a raffle drawing helps raise hundreds of dollars for local and international missions.

How does this work? Anyone is welcome to enter a basketball team (3-5) players depending on if a team wants to have substitutions for the games. The games themselves are 12 minutes in length and are played on half court style outdoor courts. Each team is randomly placed within a double elimination bracket which can be easily found with a quick google search. Once down to the championship game the crowd gathers around the court which has always proven to be a very close competitive game. The winners receive $100 and keep their championship title until the next year!

Members of the church have helped by donating their portable basketball hoops for the day as well as donating food and raffle prizes. The raffle is a simple brown bag raffle. Those who want to participate simply buy tickets, write their name on the back and place it in the brown bag for the prize they want to win. If at the end of the day their ticket is drawn, they get to go home with the prize!

basketball2As for the 50/50 free throw contest, those who wish to participate purchase a 50/50 ticket. If their ticket is drawn they get an opportunity to shoot a free throw to win half the cash collected from the 50/50 tickets purchased. There are several drawings during the day and the money stays in the pot until someone makes the shot.

Carnival games are great for the kids. Some of the games include: ring toss, bean bag toss, ping pong ball throw and everyone’s favorite the cake walk!

This fundraiser is a wonderful time for all involved regardless if you are a basketball player or a cake walker. It is simple to put together, all you need is the willingness of a small group of people and lots of early advertisement! We hope and pray that this fundraiser continues to be a joyous occasion at Freedom Moravian Church and we hope it can help other churches discover new fundraiser ideas!

Saturday, April 21 — Psalm 52
Leviticus 15:1–24; Mark 5:21–43

The snares of death encompassed me; I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the Lord: ‘O Lord, I pray, save my life!’ Psalm 116:3,4

The disciples awoke Jesus and said to Him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. Mark 4:38–39 (NKJV)

Christ Jesus, how prone we are to worry. How we forget your words, “Fear not.” When our faith is diminished by fear, gently remind us to take refuge in you. “Saranam, Saranam, Saranam.” Amen.
