October 20, 2024: True Discipleship

Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost

True Discipleship

Two of Jesus’ disciples came to him, lobbying for him to do whatever they asked of him. In Mark 10:36, Jesus responded, “What is it you want me to do for you?” They requested specific positions near Jesus’ glorious throne. Wow! How ambitious and a smack of self-centeredness!

Their request reflects a common human desire for position, privilege, and power. There two disciples apparently wanted to secure their leadership positions. After all, they had given up a lot to follow Jesus. What may appear to be an innocent request drew the displeasure of the other ten disciples. Were they jealous that the brothers were asking what they also desired? Or was it from disapproval of their request?

Jesus called them all together, to set them straight. In the world, those who are in charge seek to use their power to flaunt over others. However, in God’s kingdom, Jesus’ disciples will know true greatness in serving. See, the Son of Man came to serve and to offer his life as a ransom for others.

Jesus redirected the twelve disciples from being preoccupied with positions that are already reserved. Jesus’ desire was for them to realign themselves to a discipleship of humble service and sacrifice. True greatness in God’s kingdom is grounded in humble service, having the same attitude as in Christ, an obedient servant, even on the cross.

Siblings in Christ, be encouraged to go to God with your desires and needs, knowing that God listens. Let us, however, allow the Holy Spirit to help us to examine our motives, that they may align with God’s purposes. Are we willing to give of ourselves, even when suffering and sacrifice are involved? Do we seek status or recognition for ourselves, or are we willing to serve with humility and to suffer for the sake of others?

Each day, let us examine our motives for engagement in kingdom work. With humble hearts, let us serve faithfully for God and God alone. Great will be our reward!
