Moravian Disaster Response to Hurricanes Ian and Julia — 10/17/22 Update

The Board of World Mission continues to be in contact with our partners in Cuba and Nicaragua following Hurricanes Ian and Julia. Click here to see our update from 10/12/22 and click here to see our update from 10/13/22.

At present, thanks to your generous donations, we have sent $10,000 to Cuba, where they have seen tens of thousands of homes destroyed as well as damage to many public buildings.

Last week, leaders of the Moravian Church in Nicaragua visited Laguna de Perlas, the region that was directly affected by Hurricane Julia (photos from the visit are included at the bottom of this article), and they continue to monitor flood damage throughout the entire country. We have received reports that many homes have been completely destroyed or have lost their roofs, fruit trees and other food sources have been damaged and destroyed, and families have lost their sources of income and many belongings. The immediate needs are drinking water and water purification systems, food and kitchen utensils, clothing and other linens, and roofing materials. The Provincial Board thanks all brothers and sisters in Christ for your prayers before, during, and after Hurricane Julia, for the Moravian Church in Nicaragua as well as for sister provinces in Honduras, Cuba, and Florida.

For further information, contact the Rt. Rev. Chris Giesler at [email protected]. The best way to help is to send donations to the Moravian Disaster Response Fund. 100% of the money received in the MDR fund goes directly to these relief efforts.
