Updates from a BWM-Supported Ukrainian Teacher

January 14th, 2023

On the day that Sabina began writing this update (December 5th), there was a massive attack on Ukraine. Sabina and the other teachers took the kids down to the basement and were there without light and without heat for three hours. The first time they had to evacuate to the basement, one of the children started crying and there was nothing they could do to calm her down, but on this day the kids didn’t get scared or cry. They prayed together and continued their lessons and the teachers spent most of their free time checking the news. The children still wrote in their lessons that they were glad that they were able to be at home in Ukraine. One boy said that he believed in God and knows that God is helping the ZSU (Ukrainian military). The children spent part of the day writing letters to soldiers for a holiday celebrating Ukraine’s army.

Sabina asked us to pass on her gratitude for your continued prayers. It is difficult to work when they are without power, because it gets dark earlier in the winter and it’s hard for the children to see. It’s also hard when they are without heat and the school gets cold. The parents she works with are all very different and it is a challenging time to build teacher-parent relationships. Nevertheless, she is grateful that the school works as a big team, supporting each other and giving each other advice during difficult times.

Sabina, one of the Ukrainian teachers supported by BWM funding, expressed her gratitude for your support, which allows her to continue helping her students each day. Before the war, she enjoyed gardening and working with plants, but her life has changed a lot in the past year. Now, she does her best to serve God and help the children who have stayed in Ukraine. She told us that the hardest thing she does each day is hiding her own anxiety from the children, even when she can see the fear in their eyes. She asks for your prayers for Ukraine and especially for the generation of children growing up during this time.
