Board of World Mission Hiring Director of Mission Engagement

With gratitude for the work of the Rt. Rev. Chris Giesler, BWM Director of Mission Engagement, as he approaches a planned retirement in late 2024, the Moravian Board of World Mission (BWM) announces the beginning of a hiring process for this position.

The BWM is seeking applicants to fill the position of Director of Mission Engagement. This is a full-time exempt position. Applications will be accepted by Executive Director Justin Rabbach via email – [email protected].

This position is integral to the BWM’s work to support and connect with individuals and congregations. The DME serves as a bridge between local and global mission work and both listens to the energy of our constituents and initiates mission service and discernment opportunities. Serving in this role will require a willingness to travel and speak on behalf of the BWM, communicating about our ongoing work and inspiring others to join in!

The Director of Mission Engagement (DME) is the lead staff member for efforts to engage constituent members, congregations, and communities in the ongoing work of the Board of World Mission (BWM). The DME is responsible for building relationships, creating resources, and initiating opportunities to empower individuals to take part in mission both locally and globally. This position also is the lead point of contact for multiple global partners of the BWM, and is in regular contact (including in-person travel) with leadership from these partners.

The work of the Director of Mission Engagement falls into three categories:

1. Education

  • Facilitate mission education and mission discernment within our constituent congregations
  • Develop/coordinate mission education materials consistent with BWM’s purpose statement
  • Deepen understanding of the work and role of the BWM within the context of the Moravian Unity
  • Initiate and accept offers to speak, teach, preach and pray in line with BWM purpose statement & strategic plan
  • Engage in congregational visits and other direct constituent contact (conferences, synods, camps)

2. Service

  • Initiate BWM sponsored mission team opportunities, and sequenced opportunities for ongoing growth and training in mission service (may include creation and management of internships)
  • Develop and maintain mission team training resources, devotionals, and “how to” materials
  • Manage volunteer contacts and assist in connecting them with tangible service opportunities
  • Increase number of touch points for constituents by developing print and digital resources, website content, and interactive possibilities for our constituents

3. Mission Support

  • Develop goals and metrics to meet and evaluate Mission Engagement strategic plan elements
  • Oversee relationships as the “point person” for a portfolio of BWM global partners
  • Assist in consistent and effective communication with constituents, board, and staff
  • Manage Moravian Disaster Response appeals, funding allocations, and physical equipment
  • Be an active participant in BWM development/fundraising efforts

Desired Qualifications:

  • Dedication to serving our Lord and a sense of call to mission
  • Good skills in writing and communication, computer use, and social media
  • Organizational skills and the ability to develop and implement a strategic plan
  • Cross-cultural experience (ability in a second language other than English is desired)
  • The ability to value and affirm diversity
  • Good self-initiative – able to work on self-directed initiatives & without direct supervision
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
  • The ability to travel frequently, including internationally
  • The minimum of a bachelor’s degree
