In November 2024, BWM Executive Director Justin Rabbach had the opportunity to travel to the Ahuas Clinic in Honduras alongside Dr. Benno Marx. This clinic has been a vital part of the Moravian medical ministry to this remote area for over 75 years. While the challenges of operating a healthcare facility in such a remote region are significant, the clinic’s dedicated staff continue to serve their community with remarkable perseverance.
During the visit, Justin and Dr. Benno participated in Medical Board meetings and engaged with local leaders and staff to discuss the clinic’s operations. Topics ranged from addressing equipment needs and staff training to exploring ideas for long-term sustainability. They also had the chance to hear about successes, like preventative health education initiatives and scholarship programs aimed at developing future medical professionals – including physicians and anesthesia professionals.
As the Medical Board met, Tropical Storm Sara was approaching the east coast of Honduras, where Ahuas is located. While the worst of the hurricane avoided La Moskitia, it brought heavy rains and power outages. The board was committed to completing the business that needed to be accomplished, and met even in the dark.
The visit was a reminder of the importance of partnership and the critical role the clinic plays in its region. The Board of World Mission remains committed to walking alongside the clinic’s staff and supporting their efforts to provide quality care to those who need it most.
