Below, please find a January 2025 update from the Sierra Leone Ministry Committee of Little Church on the Lane (Charlotte, NC). We are deeply grateful for the partnership of this committee as we work together to support Moravian ministry in Sierra Leone.
Dear friends of Sierra Leone,
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and from the Worldwide Unity Mission Area in Luawa Yiehun, Kailahun, Sierra Leone.
Safiatu Braima (Provincial Acolyte) and all the Brothers and Sisters send heartfelt thanks for your support—both prayerful and financial. They thank God daily for His blessings, grace, peace, and mercy, as exemplified through your generosity and care. You have joined God in His Kingdom-building in Sierra Leone, which makes you an important partner in this expanding ministry.
All five churches are doing well, with faithful congregations attending each Sunday. Safie continues to chair quarterly meetings, where all the churches gather for study and leadership instruction. This past year, the Sierra Leone Ministry partnered with Our Daily Bread University (U.S.) to initiate a sixteen-module course in Spiritual Formation and Leadership, emphasizing basic scriptural knowledge and daily application. The faithful study group of approximately forty individuals is always prepared to meet and study the materials, raising up new leaders in the ministry by nurturing their faith and leadership skills—an essential task for the future of the ministry! Safie’s personal connection to these studies has made a tremendous impact, initiating conversations and many teaching moments. We pray for the Mission Area Leaders in each congregation and for their continued sound teaching and doctrine.
The Moravian Secondary School continues to grow, with a current enrollment of 805 students. The popularity of this Christian school can be attributed to the fact that the National Board Examinations are held there for students in the region, bringing high recognition and academic attraction to the school and village. The Kailahun Church facilities continue to be used as a Junior Secondary School for 75 students, further establishing the Moravian Junior Secondary School in that large town. The desire for Kailahun is to create a Senior Secondary School to maintain a consistent path into the next grades for these students. We praise God for the continued growth of Christian education in the region.
The primary village has faced a dilemma within the past year. The fresh water source—the cistern, which services the entire village by delivering fresh water to taps throughout the community—was being contaminated by cracks in the tank and deteriorating supply pipes miles upstream. Engineers from both the U.S. and Sierra Leone worked together to determine the requirements to correct the issue. Without immediate action, the health of the villagers would be compromised. Costs have been determined to exceed $70,050, and urgent work has already begun to repair the cistern and pipe system while fundraising efforts are underway to offset the costs. Contact Little Church on the Lane if you wish to support the fresh water initiative!
We must thank God for His work and protection over the leaders in Sierra Leone, and for their continued example of Jesus Christ. Pray for strength and wisdom for Safie, and that God keeps her safe and healthy. Give thanks that Safie continues to have an assistant, Nyadagor, to manage daily tasks. Pray for the nurturing of new leaders so that the ministry continues well into the future.
Again, thank you for your support during 2024. Your Brothers and Sisters in West Africa pray for you and send thanks for your support of this important Mission Area of the Moravian Church.
God is good—indeed!
In Jesus Christ,
The Sierra Leone Ministry Committee,
Little Church on the Lane
