The Board of World Mission is the agency that helps coordinate the North American Moravian response to disasters around the world.
The BWM is closely monitoring the situation in western Alaska after devastating flooding struck multiple communities in the wake of Typhoon Halong, which reached Alaska as a powerful storm system over the weekend. The storm brought hurricane-force winds, widespread flooding, and severe damage to coastal villages across the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta region.
Through news outlets, we know that several communities with strong Moravian ties have been directly impacted, including Kongiganak, Bethel, Napakiak, Kwigillingok, Napaskiak, Kipnuk, Quinhagak, and Tuntutuliak. Early reports indicate significant damage to homes and infrastructure. In Kwigillingok, floodwaters swept homes from their foundations, while in Bethel and surrounding villages, flooding has inundated roads and boardwalks and disrupted power. Kongiganak and Napakiak have also reported widespread destruction to critical structures. Hundreds of people have taken shelter in schools and community buildings.
BWM has not yet received direct updates from the Alaskan Province, and much remains unknown at this early stage, but it is clear that the impact of this storm is widespread and severe, and additional Moravian communities may also have been affected.
