The Board of World Mission is grateful to share news of an extraordinary act of generosity and partnership in mission. London Moravian Church in Cambridge, Wisconsin — a small, rural congregation with a deep commitment to living out Christ’s love in practical ways — has voted to distribute up to $30,000 from their investment fund to support ongoing Moravian Disaster Response (MDR) work in Alaska and Jamaica following recent storms and flooding.
This gift is especially meaningful because it represents the congregation’s first distribution from this fund in eight years. The congregation recognized the extreme need in two recent disasters that had a profound impact on Moravian communities, and it moved them to offer generous support. They expressed a desire for this gift not only to meet immediate needs, but also to inspire fellow Moravians to join them in responding to our partner church members who are rebuilding and recovering.
To honor the spirit of London Moravian Church’s generosity, we are pleased to announce that their $30,000 gift will serve as a matching challenge.
Starting now, through Christmas day, all contributions to Moravian Disaster Response — whether designated specifically for Alaska, Jamaica, or to the broader MDR fund — will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $30,000!
Why This Matters
- In Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa caused widespread damage to homes, church buildings, and community infrastructure. Congregations are working to repair roofs, restore safe gathering spaces, and support families whose livelihoods have been disrupted.
- In Alaska, entire coastal communities have found their residents displaced and are looking to start recovery and then work to repair damage from Typhoon Halong. The Moravian Church in Alaska is providing housing for some displaced residents in the seminary in Bethel, Alaska, and local relief funds are trying to distribute food and clothing to meet immediate needs.
Your gift will help provide:
- Building materials for repairs
- Emergency support to families in crisis
- Coordination of rebuilding work with local congregations
- Long-term recovery assistance rooted in local leadership
And now, every gift will go twice as far.
