MARCH 11, 2022

The Moravian Board of World Mission (BWM) invites your prayers for peace and for the people of Ukraine who continue to suffer through the invasion of their country.  Particularly disturbing is that civilians have been targeted in the attacks, including hospitals and schools.

Over 2.5 million Ukrainians have fled the country with their children to seek safe harbor. The BWM has already sent $5,000 to our partners at Church World Service, who are providing critical refugee resettlement assistance through their contacts in Ukraine as well as the neighboring countries now receiving these refugees.

Volunteers from Nova Paka congregation help prepare space for Ukrainian refugees

The BWM has also sent initial funding, with more to follow based on donations received, to Moravians in the Czech Republic, which is among the countries welcoming these weary travelers, many of whom arrive with little more than the clothes they are wearing.  The Moravian congregation in Nová Paka is already providing hospitality to families and is now rushing to renovate a hotel owned by the congregation to host additional refugees. Members of the congregation have been gathering to complete the renovations.  This congregation also has a kindergarten and primary school. They are now working with a Ukrainian school based in Kyiv to come and set up their school in Nová Paka so that the Ukrainian children can continue their studies.

Sister Jiřina Kaletová, our Moravian Unity Youth Coordinator, is part of this congregation where her father is the pastor.   She says, “I believe God has a plan for this, and it is actually interesting to think that God might have prepared us and the hotel space for such a time as this.”

The BWM invites you to join us in supporting them in their ministry of compassionate hospitality:
