Moravian Day of Service

The 2023 Moravian Day of Service is set for September 17. This celebratory day raises awareness of the importance of mission work in our Moravian faith, encourages congregations to think of new ways to make a difference in their communities, and demonstrates our desire to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. For your congregation, this can be a day to celebrate the service that you do all year long and highlight ways more of your members can get involved. We also encourage you to plan a special service opportunity that might invite a sense of community engagement and excitement among your members.

The Moravian Day of Service came from the 2018 synods of the Northern and Southern Provinces, which recognized that coordinated efforts of Moravians can help engage others in service and ministry and raise awareness of the Gospel message; that Moravians have always celebrated their faith through service and mission work locally, regionally and globally; and that Moravians derive a sense of collective unity and identity from serving together and with others. The Day of Service is an annual event that does not replace the meaningful local mission work consistently happening in our congregations. This day offers a chance to rethink how your congregation interacts with your community and encourages you to make service to others an ongoing expression of God’s love for the world.

In previous years, Moravian congregations have served their communities in a variety of ways. Some examples include:

  • Making sandwiches for a local soup kitchen
  • Picking up trash in their neighborhood
  • Writing notes of appreciation and encouragement to community members
  • Organizing donations at a local clothing bank
  • and more!
