BWM Update on Flooding in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Moravian Board of World Mission in North America has received a request for prayers and financial assistance from the Rev. Jacques Bya’unda, Chairman of the Moravian Church Mission Area, Eastern Congo. This region has recently been hard hit with flooding along the Mulongwe River near the city of Uriva.

Brother Jacques reports that the property damage is enormous, and many lives have been lost. In the city of Uriva alone, more than 50 persons have been found dead, and more than 6,000 homes have washed away. At least 20 families from the Moravian Congregation located in downtown Uriva have lost their homes and all their possessions. Thanks be to God, they all survived. Damage is still on-going as the river is still above flood stage.

The Board of World Mission in North America has wired $5,000 (USD) from our Disaster Response Fund to assist in this initial phase of recovery. We ask prayers for those affected by this extreme emergency, and for those seeking to provide relief during these challenging days. Recent statistics show that in the D.R. Congo there are 80 Moravian congregations with 40 pastors serving almost 23,000 members.
